Colin Powell, former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at age 84, died of Covid complications.

On Facebook, the Powell family said that “General Colin L. Powell was the former Secretary of State of the United States and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff”

The family stated that they had lost “a remarkable and loving husband and father, grandfather, and great American,” noting that he had been fully immunized.

Powell, the son and daughter of Jamaican immigrants became the first Black National Security Advisor during the Reagan Administration. George H.W. Bush appointed Powell as the youngest and most senior Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

As Chairman, he was responsible for Desert Storm operations in the Persian Gulf war.
