BRUSSELS, (Reuters) – More than one billion of the COVID-19 vaccines that were produced in Europe have been exported to over 150 countries since December 2020 according to Ursula von der Leyen, head European Commission.

In a statement von der Leyen claimed that “Very clearly” the European Union was the biggest exporter COVID-19 vaccinations. He also noted that EU has shipped as many vaccines to EU citizens as it has given away.

The EU started exporting vaccines during the global rollout of December 2020. However, other large producers like the United States didn’t and kept exports restricted for many months.

EU exports were mainly targeted at larger economies. Japan, Turkey, and Britain are the most important recipients of EU exports. They had supply agreements with EU vaccine manufacturers that produced jabs.

From der Leyen explained that although vaccines donated or exported by the EU are only a fraction of the total EU exports, the EU intends to increase its donations over time with the goal to give at least 500 million doses of COVID-19 to most of the world’s poorest countries.
