REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann(Reuters) – Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:) The social media company announced Monday that it plans to employ 10,000 people in Europe over the next five-years. This is to build the “metaverse” – an online community where people can communicate and exist in shared virtual space.
It would represent a major step forward for the company in pursuing the idea, as Mark Zuckerberg, the top boss of the company has said.
Facebook contributed $50 million to the building of the metaverse last September. It is where Epic Games, Roblox Corp, and Fortnite creator Epic Games are able to establish a foothold.
A test version of a virtual reality remote-work app was launched by the company in which Oculus Quest2 headset users can host meetings with avatars.
Facebook stated in July that it had created a product team for the metaverse. It would form part of Facebook Reality Labs’ augmented and virtual reality group.
According to the company, “This investment (in the creation of new jobs) represents a vote in confidence in the strength and potential of European technology talent.”
Facebook considers Europe a very important part of its business.
