Russia shuts mission to NATO in spy row By Reuters

MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Russia declared Monday it would stop the activities of its diplomat mission to NATO. The alliance had expelled eight Russians over spying.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, stated that staff from NATO’s Moscow military mission would lose their accreditation starting Nov. 1. Russian news agencies also reported this.

Lavrov stated that NATO members can reach out to our Ambassador in Belgium if they have urgent questions.

NATO announced that it expelled 8 Russian mission members who were not Russian intelligence officers on October 6.

This latest dispute represents the latest degrading of East-West ties, which are currently at post-Cold War lows.

Russia has accused NATO of provocation close to its border, and it recently conducted major exercises.

After Moscow’s 2014 annexe of Crimea from Ukraine and its support of separatists in Eastern Ukraine, the alliance stated that it was determined to increase the security of members states near Russia.
