NEW YORK. (Reuters) – Two ex-associates Rudy Giuliani were able to fund a Russian businessman to use to pay donations for U.S. elections, according to papers that were presented in court Monday.

In the second week indictment against Lev Parnas (an associate) for violating the campaign finance laws, the prosecution presented financial records to the Manhattan federal court jury.

Prosecutors allege that the Ukraine-born Parnas along with another Giuliani associate from Belarus, Igor Fruman illegally funneled money to Andrey Muravev (a Moscow-based entrepreneur) to candidate in U.S. states. The group sought licenses for cannabis-related businesses. Parnas has pleaded not guilty.

Two Muraviev-owned firms wired $1 million to an account held by Fruman’s FD Import & Export Corp between June and December 2018, bank statements showed.

This account was used to pay off over 99% of a credit card account Parnas Fruman, and their company that they started made more than $150,000 in donations for candidates and committees prior to the Nov. 6, 2018. The records were clear.

Fruman was convicted of violating the campaign finance laws on September.

Joseph Bondy Parnas’ attorney stated in opening arguments that Muraviev’s money was being used to fund business ventures and not campaign donations.

Because Parnas, Fruman and Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and New York City mayor helped Giuliani to investigate Joe Biden before the 2020 election, the case attracted attention. Biden (a Democrat) defeated Republican Trump in his re-election campaign.

Giuliani’s attorney stated that the Parnas case was separate from an federal investigation into whether Giuliani violated lobbying law while working for Trump. Giuliani was not charged and denied any wrongdoing.
