(Reuters) – An armed gang in Haiti kidnapped a group American and Canadian missionaries. The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that they are asking $17 million for their release.

The Journal reported that Justice Minister Liszt Quitel stated that the FBI and Haitian Police are in touch with kidnappers. They seek to release missionaries taken over the weekend from Port-au-Prince, Haiti by a gang known as 400 Mawozo.

According to Quitel, negotiations could last for weeks.

Six women and five kids are included in the 16-member American and Canadian group.

According to the report of the Haitian non-profit Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights (CARDH), kidnappings are more commonplace in Haiti because of a worsening political and economic crisis. There were at least 628 such incidents in the first nine month period alone.

Haitians took to the streets Monday in protest of kidnappings and gang crime, both on the increase for years. The situation has gotten worse since July’s assassination by President Jovenel Moise.
