UNITED NATIONS – The United States offered to meet North Korea, but without conditions, and it made clear that Washington does not have any hostile intentions toward Pyongyang. Linda Thomas-Greenfield (ambassador of the United States to the United Nations), said Wednesday when the Security Council was discussing North Korea’s missile launch.
North Korea, formally called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK), has accused the United States of being hostile toward Asia and claimed it is entitled to self-defense weapons.
Thomas-Greenfield stated to reporters that the DPRK must adhere to Security Council resolutions. It is now time for a sustained, substantive dialogue towards the goal of total denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.
Since 2006, North Korea has been under U.N. sanctions. These have steadily been increased in an effort to reduce funding for Pyongyang’s ballistic and nuclear missile programs. These measures include an end to ballistic missile launch bans.
Thomas-Greenfield explained that they had made an offer to meet DPRK officials. He also said, “We have made it clear that we do not have any hostile intentions toward DPRK.”
The North Korean mission in New York to the United Nations did not respond immediately to an inquiry regarding Thomas-Greenfield’s comments.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with then-U.S. president Donald Trump three times between 2018 and 2019. However, they failed to reach an agreement on U.S. demands that Pyongyang give up its nukes and North Korea’s demand for sanctions to be lifted.
Thomas-Greenfield claimed that President Joe Biden was prepared to engage with serious, sustained diplomacy.
France, Estonia, and Ireland, members of the European Council, urged North Korea “engage meaningfully” by offering to dialogue with them repeatedly.
North Korea test fired a small ballistic missile, firing it from a sub, Tuesday. The incident prompted Britain and the United States to discuss the topic in U.N Security Council 15 on Wednesday.
Thomas-Greenfield said to reporters, “It’s the latest of a number reckless provocations.” These are illegal activities. They violate multiple Security Council Resolutions. They are also unacceptable
