GOHEUNG, South Korea (Reuters) – South Korea is scheduled to conduct its first test launch into space of a domestically built rocket on Thursday in a major step toward jumpstarting the country’s space programme.
Three-stage KSLVII NURI rocket with South Korea flag emblazoned on it stood on the Naro Space Center’s launch pad before the scheduled 4 p.m. (0700 GMT) blastoff.
NURI (or “world”) rocket can carry 1.5-ton payloads 600km to 800km in orbit (373 to 497 miles above Earth). South Korea intends to launch navigation satellites and surveillance satellites.
Korea Aerospace Research Institute, (KARI) supervised the move of the 200-ton rocket to its launch platform on Wednesday. It was then raised into position.
The Ministry of Science and Technology stated in a statement that “all preparations such as umbilical connection and confidential inspect have been completed.”
Space launches were a delicate issue for the Korean peninsula. North Korea now faces sanctions due to its nuclear-armed ballistic missile program.
South Korea has plans for future launches of a variety of military satellites. Officials deny the NURI can be used as a weapon.
After multiple delays, several failed test attempts, the country’s final such rocket was launched in 2013. It was developed jointly with Russia.
Officials told Reuters that South Korea will be able to choose the type of payload and set launch times, while also protecting “confidential payloads” such as spy satellites.
