Wally Adeyemo was the United States Department of the Treasury’s Deputy Secretary. She stated that the Treasury will likely impose more sanctions on those companies engaged in illegal transactions related to ransomware.
Adeyemo spoke at an event held by the Center for a New American Security. He was joined by Ambassador Paula Dobriansky and former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew. When criminals pose a threat to national security, the U.S. government could be reaching into its toolbox to use sanctions. He specifically mentioned “crypto exchanges or mixers that are fundamentally in the business of furthering cybercriminals” as possible targets.
