Wally Adeyemo is the Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of the Treasury. He stated that the Treasury would be increasing sanctions against companies who engage in ransomware transactions.

Adeyemo addressed an online audience hosted by Center for a New American Security. Adeyemo was joined at the event by former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, and Ambassador Paula Dobriansky. When criminals pose a threat to national security, the U.S. government could be reaching into its toolbox to use sanctions. He specifically mentioned “crypto exchanges or mixers that are fundamentally in the business of furthering cybercriminals” as possible targets.
