WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States expressed concern Friday about China’s action against the National Basketball Association. This was after highlights from Boston Celtics were removed from a Chinese streaming site following an online critique of China’s treatment Tibet.

Enes Kanter, Celtics’ backup center, posted a tweet this week showing support for Tibet. The video featured him wearing a T-shirt bearing the image the Dalai Lama (the exiled spiritual leader) and was open to all. He called Xi Jinping the Chinese President a “brutal dictator.”

Kanter was mocked on Chinese social networks. However, a detailed timeline of Kanter’s team’s games was not available via China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd (OTC:) Ltd. Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that Kanter was trying to gain attention and his statements “weren’t worth refuting”.

An email from the State Department spoke out about the People’s Republic of China, in which a spokesperson stated: “The United States is greatly concerned by the actions of the PRC against the National Basketball Association because of statements one player made concerning Tibet.”

The spokesperson stated that “We value freedom and support all who exercise it.”

Since 1951, Beijing has controlled Tibet’s remote west region. It took over control after the People’s Liberation Army entered and took power in what they call a “peaceful Liberation.” They consider the Dalai Lama to be a separatist.
