TOKYO, Reuters – Japan’s Princess Mako turned 30 on Saturday. This was her last birthday as a member the Imperial family until she wed her boyfriend next week.
On Tuesday, her marriage to Kei Komuro will make her a commoner. This is in accordance with the laws that state female imperial families cannot retain their royal status.
Images of Mako walking along the imperial estate with her sister, were published by the Imperial Household Agency. The princess did not comment on Mako’s birthday.
Three-year marriage between Princess Mako (now Komuro) was marred by scandal and controversy. It all started with a tabloid reporting that Komuro had been involved in a money scam.
In a news conference in October, The Imperial Household Agency revealed that Princess Mako has developed post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to the extreme media scrutiny she was subjected to during her engagement.
