(Reuters) – The Canadian Coast Guard stated that it was monitoring a ship carrying containers off Victoria, British Columbia. It is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard in order to evaluate the situation.

The Canadian Coast Guard received information from the MV Zim Kingston around 11:00 this morning that a fire had broken out onboard the vessels,” the Coast Guard said late Saturday.

According to the report, the vessel was carrying over 52,000 kilograms of xanthates. These chemicals are used in the mining sector. The ship also contains potassium amylxanthate. Potassium amylxanthate can be considered an irritant or an environmental danger.

The Canadian Coast Guard stated that a joint response by all agencies is underway to assist. They also added that an assessment was being done to assess the potential pollution from containers.

M/V Zim Kingston, a bulk carrier, reported that the vessel had experienced rough weather west of Juan de Fuca. A tweet from the United States Coast Guard indicated that approximately 40 containers had been lost by the vessel.
