LONDON, (Reuters) – The budget of Rishi Sunak, British finance minister, this week contains an additional 5.9 Billion Pounds (or $8.1 billion), for health services over the next three years in order to lower waiting lists.
According to the finance ministry, this sum adds on to an 8-billion-pound package which was announced in September for tackling backlogs related the COVID-19 epidemic.
This spending will increase what’s called elective activity (NHS), such as non-emergency procedures, by 30% in the financial year 2024/25.
The sum includes 2.3 billion Pounds for testing, 2.1 Billion Pounds to enhance the technology of the health system, and 1.5 Billion Pounds to expand the number of beds.
Sunak declared in a statement, “This is an important investment in the NHS. It will ensure that we have all the necessary buildings and equipment to provide the best care for our patients and to keep the NHS in good shape.”
On Saturday, the government said the budget https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk-plans-3-billion-pounds-new-education-funding-budget-2021-10-23 would include 5 billion pounds to fund health research and 3 billion pounds for education.
Sunak will likely set very tight spending limits in most areas of public spending on Wednesday. This is in response to the record-breaking borrowing that occurred during the pandemic.
