(Reuters) -Protestors climbed barricades to push toward the Brooklyn Nets’ arena doors on Sunday. They were protesting NBA All-Star Kyrie, who was unable to join the team because he had not been vaccinated for COVID-19.

Online videos showed that protestors gathered outside the arena before the Nets’ 2021-22 NBA season opener. Some held signs saying “Stand with Kyrie”, while others chanted “Let Kyrie Play.”

It was necessary to secure the premises. Barclays (LON: ) The Center was temporarily closed at one point. However, the match against Charlotte Hornets started on schedule at 4 p.m. ET (2000 GMT).

“Barclays Center temporarily closed its doors today to remove protestors from main plaza doors and allow guests to safely enter the arena,” a spokeswoman for the arena stated in a statement to Reuters.

Only ticketed guests had the right to enter and the game ran according to the schedule.

Irving can’t play in NBA home games as Irving doesn’t need to have been immunized due to New York coronavirus regulations.

Irving was a seven time All-Star, and the Nets made it clear that Irving would not participate in practice or play until he becomes eligible.

According to the Nets, Kyrie had made an individual choice and the Nets respected that right.

“Currently, the decision restricts him in his ability as a member of the team. Therefore, we won’t allow any of our members to take part with only part-time availability.”
