GENEVA, (Reuters) – UN human rights specialists condemned Washington’s Monday expulsions of Haitian migrants. They claimed that they were part of a policy “racialised inclusion” of Black Haitians at U.S. ports-of-entry.

The United States authorized the expulsion collectively of asylum-seekers and migrants under its Title 42 policy, which was passed by former President Donald Trump’s administration on sanitary grounds.

U.S. officials claim that it has so far returned hundreds of migrants to Haiti from Del Rio, Texas and processed thousands away from the encampment.

According to a statement, the five U.N. experts on racism and homophobia wrote an “allegation” letter to Washington in protest at Washington’s actions.

This letter has not been made public.

Experts stated, “In expediting collective expulsions of Haitian migrants,” that the United States exposes a group of predominantly Black migrants (forced returns and impermissible risk of repoulement) and to human rights abuses without an individualised assessment. They also noted that these actions are likely to violate international refugee rights and human freedom laws.

They said that “States can’t label all migrants from a specific nationality per se as threats to national security” and that all migrants, regardless of their nationality, race, or status in migration, should be protected under international law.

An spokesperson for U.N. specialists stated she did not know of any particular legal challenge.

Some health professionals and other Democrats are urging Joe Biden to stop applying Title 42, which has effectively blocked asylum access for thousands of migrants from hundreds of thousands across the country. This order has also been affecting the lives of many in the Caribbean.

Biden’s administration justified the move as needed to reduce the spread the coronavirus.
