REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/FilesWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden plans to announce plans for up to $102million to increase the U.S. strategic partner with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. This will be announced at a virtual summit held with 10 nations on Tuesday.
A White House factsheet stated that the U.S. will fund programs related to education, climate change, and health.
It said that $40 million of the amount will be used to address the COVID-19 Pandemic, and to strengthen ASEAN’s capacity to detect, prevent and respond to any future epidemics.
An additional $20.5million will be used to address the climate crisis, and an additional $20 million can be used to promote trade and cooperation in innovation and trade. It said that $17.5 million more is available for education and another $4 million will be used to support gender equality and equity.
The participation of Biden in the virtual summit is the first time Washington has engaged at the highest level in 4 years with an organization it regards as critical to its strategy for pushing back against China.
A senior U.S. official said that Biden would also participate in Wednesday’s broader East Asia Summit. This summit brings together ASEAN nations and others in the Indo-Pacific area.
