DETROIT, Reuters – General Motors Co. (NYSE:), on Tuesday revved up its drive to expand Corvette’s sports car brand worldwide, using a 670 horsepower, eight-cylinder combustion engine. This challenger to the likes Ferrari NV (NYSE:), Porsche and McLaren.

Officials from the company told Reuters that the latest Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is the flagship marque’s performance-oriented sports car. It’s a racetrack-ready, high-performance version of Detroit’s automaker.

Drivers in Australia, Japan and Europe will find their Corvettes with steering wheels on either side.

Tadge Juechter, Corvette’s Executive Chief Engineer, stated that there is a lot to be gained.

According to Steve Majoros (Vice President for Marketing at GM’s Chevrolet division, which produces the Corvette), the Bowling Green factory that assembles Corvettes is capable of producing more than 40,000 vehicles per year. However, the plant has been hampered due to the pandemic in the United States and disruptions in supply chains.

GM stated that in 2020 it sold 23,858 Corvettes around the world and 27,376 within its first nine months in 2021. More than 24,000 Corvettes have been purchased in the United States this year by customers.

This new Corvette is a sports car with a middle-engine that looks more like a Ferrari Supercar.

The 2023 Corvette Z06, while Ferrari introduces gasoline-electric hybrid and turbocharged engine, is for car enthusiasts who prefer older cars. It’s wrapped in modern skin. This hand-built, 5.5 Liter V-8 engine is capable of producing 8,600 revolutions/minute without any turbocharger or battery booster.

GM has yet to disclose the pricing of Z06 next summer. Corvettes currently start from just $61,000. Z06 models in the past have been about $25,000 more expensive than their most affordable counterparts.

Like other car makers, GM is working on the challenges of engineering fully battery electric supercars https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-mclaren-electric-focus-idINKBN2AG0IC – an imperative as regulators in major markets propose banning sales of petroleum-fueled vehicles as soon as 2030.

The motors or battery packs that can propel a car at racetrack speeds, are not lightweight and have limited range.

Juechter stated, “We will be slower to party.” “Until the battery technology becomes available, we won’t be able to do it.”
