MILAN (Reuters). Carmaker Stellantis agreed to a restructuring plan for its production in Turin. This will take place by mid-January according to FIM, UILM unions, FISMIC unions, UGLM unions, and AQCFR unions.

Stellantis had earlier announced that the Grugliasco production line would be moved to Mirafiori, near Turin. This was to boost efficiency.

Grugliasco’s production will end on December 17, and it will move to Mirafiori. Production will resume on January 17th, according to unions.

This will allow for five Maserati model years in Mirafiori.

Mirafiori will be home to all 1,100 Grugliasco workers by 2024, with minimal impact on the local jobs.

Stellantis earlier announced the restructuring for Melfi in Italy. This is because production there has been under investigation for being more expensive than anywhere else in Europe. It was created at the start of the year by the merging of Fiat Chrysler with France’s PSA.

Melfi will merge its two lines of Jeep and Fiat models (including hybrids) into one enhanced line, which won’t result in any loss of capacity or job opportunities.

Mirafiori will continue to produce the small electric 500 Fiat car.

According to unions, Stellantis plans to double the number of workers on its line starting in January. This is done to increase production of BEV500, which has been one of Europe’s most popular EV models.

Stellantis declined comment.

The agreement was not signed by the leftist FIOM in Italy. This is a warning sign of tensions that could increase in the future. Stellantis did not present a comprehensive plan for Italy and failed to make new investments or productions to replace the existing capacity.
