WASHINGTON (Reuters] – Two former senators were confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. The widows of two senators received high-ranking diplomatic positions. They included ex-Republican Senator Jeff Flake, former Democratic Senator Tom Udall and ex-Democratic Senator Tom Udall, former ambassador to Turkey.

By voice vote both were confirmed. Cindy Hensley McCain was also confirmed. Cindy Hensley McCain is an Arizona businesswoman who is the wife of late Republican Senator John McCain. Cindy will hold the rank of U.S. Representative at the U.N. Agencies for Food and Agriculture

Voice vote confirmed Victoria Reggie Kennedy (an attorney and gun control advocate, who is also the widow of Ted Kennedy) as Austrian Ambassador.

Four ambassadors were confirmed in the divided Senate. Republicans refused to confirm most of the Democratic nominees.

Flake said that he wasn’t in tune with the Republican Party in the Trump era. He resigned from the Senate at the end of his term. Flake endorsed Democratic Presidential Joe Biden in his bid for the White House against Trump.

McCain also supported Biden in 2020. He said that Biden was a leader who represented American values and could unite America.

Trump repeatedly attacked her husband’s death, even joking about his military service which involved years spent in North Vietnamese prison camps during the Vietnam War.
