(Reuters). – On Tuesday, a Boise man shot at a mall with a handgun, injuring many others and killing two, officials said.

Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee said that investigators still have not determined whether the death resulted in a gunfire exchange with officers on the spot or from the self-inflicted shot before the suspect was taken into custody.

Lee said that the motive behind Monday’s attack at Boise Town Square on the west side of Idaho’s capital was still under investigation.

On Tuesday, Jacob Bergquist (27-years-old) was identified publicly as the suspect. He is a Boise resident. Lee stated that he has had prior encounters with security officers at malls and the police over “disruptive behaviour.”

“We had previously been in contact with him.” ()Lee stated that we didn’t have any reason for Bergquist to be arrested and added that Bergquist wasn’t believed to have worked at the mall.

New details were also revealed by police, stating that the suspect was dressed in black and fired several shots within the mall. He then fled, but officers arrived at the scene in less than 2 minutes.

The prompt response of law enforcement prevented a more grave tragedy, he said.

According to the county coroner, the victims of the shooting were Joseph Acker (26-year-old mall security officer) and Roberto Arguelles (49-year old hospital worker who died from gunshot wounds).

Police said two females, aged 53 and 23 years, were hurt as the suspect walked through the mall, shooting rounds into the ground. Another woman, aged 68, sustained injuries in her car outside the building. Authorities claimed that she was caught between the police and gunman.

Boise police officers responded to the call. A bullet pierced his windshield and he sustained injuries. Police said that evidence indicates that the gunfire had struck his hat.

According to police, another victim was brought by private transport to a hospital. He had been injured in an accident while running from the mall.

Authorities said that none of the injuries sustained by any of these people were life-threatening.

Lee stated that the suspect shot all of his shots with a handgun. However, a online police statement indicated that he had multiple guns.
