(Reuters). Intel Corp (NASDAQ) announced Wednesday a new family of faster processor chips for personal computer and claimed that it will double the speed of the U.S. government’s supercomputer.

After losing its position as the fastest chip maker, Intel seeks to get back its leadership. The announcement was made by Intel, Santa Clara (California), at an event that aimed to persuade software developers to create code for the chips.

Intel presented versions of the 12th generation Intel Core processors for computers, codenamed Alder Lake. It said that the new product line would eventually contain 60 varieties of chips, destined to fit 500 different types of computers from different manufacturers.

According to the company, it will ship 28 variants of its chip to computer makers starting in November.

Intel said Aurora, a supercomputer Intel built with the U.S. Department of Energy (NYSE:), will run twice as fast, as it was originally designed. Intel said the computer will exceed 2 exaflops, meaning the ability to perform 2 quintillion – or 2,000,000,000,000,000,000 – calculations per second.

Intel had originally committed https://www.reuters.com/article/ctech-us-usa-intel-idCAKCN1QZ298-OCATC to deliver the $500 million computer this year with 1 exaflop of performance, but manufacturing delays forced it to postpone delivery until next year. In the meantime, Argonne officials tapped Intel’s rivals https://www.reuters.com/article/nvidia-amd-idCNL1N2PV1L6 Nvidia (NASDAQ:) Corp and AMD for a smaller system built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:) Co as a test system to continue developing software technologies for the delayed machine.
