WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – A trade group comprising major U.S. cargo and passenger carriers asked the State Department “to act urgently” in order to meet the requirements of airlines for rights to fly over Russian airspace. According to a letter seen at Reuters

Airlines for America is a consortium of American Airlines (NASDAQ;), Delta Airlines(NYSE:), FedEx Corp. (NYSE:)). United Parcel Service (NYSE:), and other, asked for assistance by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in an Oct. 14 correspondence.

The letter stated that many U.S. carriers urgently require additional rights to fly Russian airspace in order to satisfy market demand. It also said that without these rights, “U.S. Airlines will have to operate on alternative, inefficient routes which could result in technical stops and time penalties as well as excess CO2 emissions, loss of historical slot rights, and other consequences.”
