Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was heard accusing other tech companies with “stifling innovations” by charging high fees and limiting choice to consumers in a live stream. This while his company is facing an investigation. antitrust lawsuit from the federal governmentCongress is under greater pressure. recently-leaked internal documents

Zuckerberg posted the remarks at Facebook Connect eventHe made his announcement Thursday the company has changed its name to Meta

He also laid out the company’s plans to build a metaverse — a virtual reality experience where people can meet online. It seemed that he was referring to mobile operating system like the one created by AppleAnd GoogleHe did, however, not name any companies or describe the kinds of platforms that he was referring to.

The comments still show that the company wants to be different from its Big Tech counterparts as it faces severe pressure from many branches of government as well as fighting charges for anticompetitive behavior. These comments recall the long-standing tensions that existed between Zuckerberg (and Apple CEO Tim Cook) in particular.

During his presentation to Facebook Connect, Zuckerberg stated that the past few years had been “humbling.” The last few years have seen the Cambridge Analytica data breach, a $5B settlement with Federal Trade Commission regarding privacy practices and allegations that Facebook facilitated misinformation that led to false claims of U.S. election theft.

Zuckerberg stated that he has learned from his mistakes that building products doesn’t suffice. Also, we need to work with ecosystems in order for millions of people, both consumers and creators, to be able and rewarded for what they do.

He said that while Facebook has billions of users it is huge, it was also a learning curve to create for other platforms.

Zuckerberg explained that living by their rules had profoundly affected my opinions about the technology industry. “Most important, I believe that high prices and a lack of choice are holding the web economy back.

This language seems to echo the complaints made by many app developers against Apple and Google. Zuckerberg didn’t say this. Epic Games is Fortnite’s maker sued both companiesDevelopers are being charged fees for using their platforms’ apps to make payments. A judge in Apple’s case ruled recently that Apple was not a monopoly but she did say that Apple cannot force developers to use their in-app payment system.

Zuckerberg was proud of the company’s “different approach.” which he announced would rebrand as “Meta,”it would require. He stated, “We want as many people to be served as possible. This means that we work to reduce our costs, and not increase them.”

Zuckerberg stated that sideloading would be supported by the company, which allows users to download apps from outside of an app store. This is “rather than making them use Quest to search for apps and reach customers.” Zuckerberg’s comments were a striking contrast to Apple which, according to its security policy, prohibits sideloading from iOS. Google supports sideloading Android apps.

Although they have had disagreements in the past about their methods, Cook and Zuckerberg rarely call each other out. Cook answered a question shortly after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. He said that he wouldn’t have been in the same situation as Zuckerberg. Later, he gave a speech tying business models using data collection to drive targeted ads, and amplifying content with algorithms, to real-world violence

Zuckerberg has also criticised Apple’s recent behavior. privacy changes that make it harder for developers to target adsApple has been cited as an example of a company that competes in messaging services.

Zuckerberg indicated that details regarding how the company will be charging developers Meta’s environment are still being worked out. Although the company plans to provide many services at low prices, Zuckerberg said that it will need to raise some fees for a period of time to ensure there isn’t too much loss on the program.
