FRANKFURT – Next spring, the European Central Bank could end emergency bonds purchases but needs to monitor inflation as persistently high prices may call for a reduction in stimulus.

Mueller reiterated the ECB policy message of Thursday by saying that the bank should focus on inflation and whether it causes wage growth to accelerate, which could increase the rate of price rises above 2% over the long-term.

Mueller, a member on the ECB’s Governing Council said that if this happened, the central bank wouldn’t be able continue its policy for large bond purchases, and low interest rates, in a blog posting.
