(Reuters). GameStop Corp (NYSE:), the stock that became so popular with day traders in this year’s market, reported on Friday that Jenna Owens had announced her resignation, only seven months after she joined the video retailer as its chief operating officer.
This is GameStop’s first significant executive departure since June, when the company appointed Matt Furlong as its chief executive officer.
Owens joined GameStop as a March executive for Alphabet (NASDAQ) Inc and Amazon.com Inc. Ryan Cohen was the former CEO and cofounder of Chewy (NYSE.) Inc. He laid the foundations to make the brick-and mortar retailer a thriving e-commerce giant.
GameStop didn’t provide any reason for Owens leaving, but it is now effective. In a regulatory filing, the company stated that Owens and it had entered into a “separation arrangement.” This is a common negotiation when executives and companies do not agree.
GameStop used separate agreements to end its relationship with Jim Bell, the chief financial officer of GameStop and George Sherman, the chief executive officer. Furlong became the CEO and Mike Recupero was CFO.
The filing stated that Owens would be eligible for a severance payment. Other GameStop executives will assume her duties.
The company did not respond to the filing. Owens was not available for comment immediately.
Cohen joined GameStop’s board along with two former Chewy executives in January. This was right before retail investors began to pile into the stock, driving it up by more than 2,500%. GameStop’s shares lost some of the gains, and it is currently valued at approximately $14 billion.
Cohen, who was elected chairman of GameStop in June has been pushing hard to make customers experience better but hasn’t offered any detailed plans about GameStop’s digital transformation.
A Grapevine-based firm that sells video games for consoles is facing competition from streaming services like Apple Inc (NASDAQ) which allows users to stream video games directly on their televisions.
Cohen recruited several executives from Amazon including Furlong, Elliott Wilkie and Chief Growth Officer in March.
According to public records, the company hired many new supply chain and technology executives from Chewy and Zulily.
Two sources claimed that Cohen and Furlong let go senior employees recently who didn’t fit the system.
