The name of the company has changed to MetaThe former name of the company was FacebookIt is trying to get rid of what employees call a “brandtax” on apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.
Meta CEO Mark ZuckerbergThe rebranding was announced on Thursday after a seven-week long process of document dumps. These documents showed that Facebook knows of the harmful effects its products have caused and refuses to correct them. The brand tax goes back to 2016, when Facebook became a hub for hateful and misleading content.
People with expertise in the subject say that Facebook’s other services like Messenger and Instagram have been unable to separate themselves from the embarrassment they’ve suffered over the last half-decade.
In 2019, brand separation was particularly challenging. Facebook announcedAll of the services would be tagged with Facebook after their names. Messenger evolved into Messenger via Facebook. Other apps became Instagram, WhatsApp and Instagram through Facebook.
Facebook claimed at the time that the new branding was meant to clarify users. Similar was true for Oculus and Workplace business software offerings, both of which received the same label from Facebook.
According to the company, “This branding change is a way of better communicating our ownership structure to those people and companies who use our services for connecting, sharing, building community and growing their audiences.” press releaseNovember 4, 2019
Facebook didn’t express concern over consumer confusion behind closed doors. The company wanted to turn around the negative publicity it had suffered, including the disastrous public relations campaign that saw the Facebook CEO apologize. Cambridge AnalyticaCNBC interviewed several employees who were involved in the data theft scandal of 2018.
Facebook’s brand was in disarray. According to former employees who requested anonymity because of the confidential nature of the information, Zuckerberg decided that he would consolidate his branding to better associate Facebook with its less-sullied offerings.

Many employees suggested to Zuckerberg that they follow the Google route, which has created the parent company. AlphabetSources said that 2015 was not the year to attach Facebook to all things, but rather just 2015.
Zuckerberg didn’t make the decision to show Facebook rather than his company’s products based on data. One former executive said that he had been presented research which showed trust in Facebook brands was affected by the association of any company products to it.
According to another employee, that information was found in the research for Facebook’s Portal video-calling platform, which was announced in 2018. According to data, putting Facebook’s name on the device would decrease public trust. The name Facebook Portal was chosen by the company anyway.
CNBC was asked by a spokesperson to provide comment when they were asked. a Thursday postAlex Schultz, Chief Marketing Officer at Meta
Schultz explained that in 2019, new branding was created to link all our products but kept the original Facebook brand for the company as well. The shared Facebook name can cause confusion not just with those using WhatsApp and Instagram but also the constituencies with whom we collaborate. This change is important because it helps people know when things are coming from the Facebook app or the company.
The most hurtful thing about Instagram?
The 2019 redesign of Instagram had a particularly devastating effect on the platform.
Most teens and young people use Facebook’s photo app, despite having a long negative perception of the site. Facebook, the “big blue app,” was perceived as the location where parents and strange uncles could share stories with their children and leave comments on others’ posts.
Instagram’s marketing team began to see, through quarterly brand monitoring results, that this new label was causing problems.
Ex-employees claimed that they tried to reduce the font size of “from Facebook”, not use it in any way, or change the colors so as to hide the Facebook logo. One former employee claims that they lost the end.
Zuckerberg claimed that Facebook has made Instagram a huge success ever since. acquiring it for $1 billion in 2012An ex-executive recalled that Instagram had to do the same, and it was now time for Instagram’s return.
The success of Instagram marketers was eventually measured in terms of how they connected the brands. Zuckerberg made it mandatory and was not negotiable.
Messenger was allowed to make some separation according to several employees.
Messenger, unlike Oculus, WhatsApp, and Instagram, was not acquired. Facebook transformed Messenger into a separate app in 2014. Messenger, which aims to appeal to younger users, was granted the “blessing” by two ex-employees a year ago in order to help improve its brand.
Messenger is now available a new logo last yearWith a gradient color, primarily purple, that looks similar to Instagram’s logo. This was done by the Messenger team to make the app more appealing to Millennials and Gen Z users who are increasingly using TikTok.

Meta points out that there is no way to be sure that Facebook’s brand taxes will dissipate.
Zuckerberg, however has changed at least his approach in less than 2 years since he added “from Facebook” on all his main services.
The company already began rebranding several units. Reality Labs will be the new name for the hardware division. F2 (Facebook Financial), the payments division was formerly known as Reality Labs. Novi will be the new name for Novi, the company’s cryptocurrency wallet software.
Zuckerberg remains defiantFrances Haugen, an ex-employee, leaked a number of documents. This whistleblower was also responsible for many stories in the Wall Street Journal, among others. The company was one of the top stories. knew Instagram was detrimentalto teens’ mental health, and I was doing very little about it.
After the release of this quarter’s earnings report, Zuckerberg stated that he believes what he is seeing was a concerted effort to use leaked documents selectively to create a false image about his company.
Some documents revealed that there was a 13% decline in teenage Facebook users since 2019 and a predicted drop of 45% within the next two-years. according to The Verge. Facebook research also revealed that they did not expect people born after 2000, to join their social network, until they are 24-25 years of age, or if they have ever joined. Bloomberg reported.
Facebook reported on this issue Monday. In an attempt to draw young people to its platform, the company announced that it will begin to pivot Instagram and Facebook.
Zuckerberg indicated that all services will be made more appealing to young people, though he said it would take many years to achieve this goal.
First, you must move away from Facebook.
