(Reuters: Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:), on Friday, raised objections to allowing developers to use third-party payment options. This is ahead of a next-month hearing that could decide if a number of antitrust court orders should be paused.
After a long trial by Epic Games’ “Fortnite”, the U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers (NYSE) made a favorable ruling for Apple. She upheld the practice that requires developers to use its app payment system and charged commissions.
Gonzalez Rogers was concerned that customers didn’t have information on other payment options for their apps. Apple was ordered to end its ban on buttons, links externally or any other call to action that directs customers to purchase mechanisms, outside of Apple’s payment system.
Apple will have until Dec. 9, to comply with the order. However, Apple has appealed against the decision and asked that the order be temporarily rescinded while they appeal the ruling. That could potentially take over a year. The hearing is scheduled for November 9.
Apple’s Friday statement was its first. It expressed strong objections to the requirement to permit buttons and links to facilitate outside payments. Apple first suggested in the filing that it was less against developers being able to share information about alternative ways of paying.
According to the company, buttons and links hinder its ability to demand developers use in-app payment (IAP). The court upheld this claim.
“Restrictions on linking out are inextricably tied to Apple’s requirement that developers use IAP for purchases of digital content—a requirement this Court considered in detail and upheld against Epic’s challenge,” Apple said.
Apple expressed fewer objections regarding in-app messaging about payment methods other than cash, but stated it could want to restrict their content, placement or format and the judge’s current orders wouldn’t permit that without additional legal challenges.
