ROME (Reuters – On Sunday, world leaders tossed coins in Rome’s Trevi Fountain – perhaps seeking happiness – as part of a long tradition that has been passed down from the Italian capital over hundreds of years.
Legend states that throwing your coin over your left shoulder in the fountain will bring you back to Rome.
The majority of leaders who took part in the photo shoot on the sidelines of a Summit of the Group of 20 largest economies around the world just tossed the coin over the shoulder.
Mario Draghi (Prime Minister) remained motionless in Rome while Joe Biden, the U.S. president, skipped the event.
According to tradition, tossing money into Trevi Fountain will guarantee a return to Rome. “But what was going though my mind was that the world must return to pre-COVID19,” Tedros Adhanom Gobreyesus, head of World Health Organization wrote via Twitter (NYSE:).
Specially minted one-euro coins were presented to leaders. The reverse side featured Leonardo da Vinci’s Vetruvian figure, the symbol for Italy’s G20 presidency.
Trevi Fountain was built in 1762 and covers Palazzo Poli’s entire façade in central Rome. It features statues of Tritons leading the Shell Chariot of Oceanus. This illustrates the theme of the Taming of the Waters.
Federico Fellini’s late director set the famous scene in the fountain in the film “La Dolce Vita”. Anita Ekberg waded into the fountain at midnight, inviting Marcello Mastroianni along to her.
Frank Sinatra, a crooner and singer of the song Three Coins in the Fountain sang about “each one searching happiness” in the song. He then asked “Which one will the fountain bless?””.
Tourists each year throw coins worth around one million euros ($1.16million) into the basin. The city receives all the funds from tourists.
