GLASGOW, Scotland — U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday will warn world leaders at the COP26 climate summit that it is now “one minute to midnight” in the race to prevent global heating from surpassing a critical threshold.

Johnson, who is scheduled to speak at Monday’s World Leaders Summit Opening Ceremony: “Humanity has long past run down the time on climate change,” Johnson said. “It is one minute before midnight, and it is time to act.”
Six years have passed since the Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2005 by almost 200 countries and aimed to keep global temperature rises to 2°C above preindustrial levels.

Johnson was one of many world leaders and diplomats who attempted to reduce expectations for success during the build-up to this summit. But, over half of all the nations in the world insisted that “no excuses” can be made for the failure to deliver on their promises to Glasgow.
Johnson previously voiced skepticism over the climate crisis and told BBC TV that he believed the odds of a positive outcome to COP26 were six out of 10.
