UNITED NATIONS. (Reuters). Mediators believe that the contours of a path out of Sudan’s crisis will emerge over the coming days. This was the U.N. special envoy on Monday.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan threw down Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s Cabinet a week back and arrested important politicians. Volker Perthes, a New Yorker who was video-recording from Sudan said that Hamdok is still under house arrest at his home.

Perthes stated that there are many mediation efforts underway in Khartoum, by various actors. We are supporting some of these mediation efforts and proposing ideas and coordination with others.

He said that it is larger packages being offered for negotiation. They hope to see the package’s contours within the next few days. It is clear that there must be an escape route.

Perthes claimed he was unable to speak on the demands or conditions of Hamdok or Burhan. The mediators were shuffled among the two.

Political representatives involved in mediation talks say that the most important compromise being discussed is Hamdok’s proposal to have full executive powers and appoint an administration of technocrats.

According to sources, the proposal was presented to all parties. The plan would replace the Sovereign Council, which has 14 members, with an honorary council of three.

They stated that political parties and rebel groups as well as the military, which were partners in the government before the coup, would all be represented in Parliament. The Security and Defense Council would also continue to be led by the military.

This coup occurred 2 1/2 years after Omar al-Bashir was ousted by a popular uprising. Omar had been Sudan’s third-largest country for over three decades.

On Saturday hundreds of thousands marched to protest the military regime and demand the return of civilian rule. A doctors’ committee stated that three victims were killed by security forces.

Burhan claimed that he removed his cabinet to prevent civil war, as civilian politicians encouraged hostility toward the Armed Forces. According to Burhan, he still believes in a democratic transition that includes elections for July 2023.
