LONDON (Reuters – Britain’s end to its furlough programme did not result in a sudden increase in job seekers, data suggests. It is possible that the Bank of England could consider raising interest rates.

According to Indeed’s research, only a few British workers are now urgently seeking a job. This was seen by Reuters before publication.

There have not been any official statistics on the fate of furloughed workers since Sept. 30, so no information is available. According to the Office for National Statistics of Britain, between 900,000. and 1.4million employees were furloughed at end September. Up to 700,000.

Some BoE policymakers believe it is better to delay raising interest rates than wait to see how Britain will react to the ending of furlough.

Forecasters for the government’s budget predicted that unemployment would increase to 1.8million people, or 5.25 percent of the workforce, in the fourth quarter of 2012. This is an improvement from the 4.5% rate in August.

Indeed’s mid October survey of 5 000 working-age British adults showed little increase in jobseekers.

According to Indeed’s survey, 7.7% of workers said that they are “actively searching, urgently”, up from 6.8% and 7.0%, respectively, in September, and July. This percentage rose from 17.3% to 17.9%.

According to Indeed, the statistical significance of the October-September increase in job seekers active was not significant.

According to economist Pawel Adrjan, “The fact that there has not been an urgent job search suggests that employers are unlikely to realize the hope that furlough will flood the labour market full of candidates.”

WORKERS RETURN to EMPLOYERS

British employers had record levels of job vacancies last September. Last month saw empty fuel tanks and shelves gaps as there were no job vacancies for sectors such as truck driving or food processing.

Lloyds Bank (LON) Bank stated Monday that 60% percent of companies planned to bring back their furloughed employees, and 30% would restore more than half.

Indeed has done separate research that shows Britain lies in the middle for international job opportunities rebounding after the pandemic.

The number of job openings in Britain was 35% more than they were in February 2020, as reported by the British Job Postings Association. Australia posted 71% more job listings than February 2020, while the United States saw a 48% growth. Belgium, Spain, and Switzerland saw only single-digit gains. Recruitment in Israel was flat.

Some sectors that were not affected by the recession included tourism, beauty and aviation. There was also some accounting and sales work.

The time of job ad increases closely tracked COVID-19’s relaxation, which was in turn linked to the rise in vaccination rates in many countries.

Adrjan stated that public health was crucial for both economic recovery as well as the health of the labour market.
