ABUJA (Reuters – Six people died after a building collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria’s capital city.
Africa’s largest country is prone to building collapses. There are few regulations enforced, and the construction materials are often poor.
Olufemi Oke Osanyintolu, state official, stated that Monday’s victims were being rescued by search and rescue efforts.
Oke-Osanyintolu reported that “Currently, all responders have been on the ground while search and rescue continues,” adding that six deaths had occurred.
He said that four people had been rescued and three others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Witnesses claim that up to 100 persons are still missing following the collapse of the luxurious residential building, which trapped workers in a heap of rubble.
The floodlights from generators illuminated the scene and heaps of concrete and metal enveloped the area where the building was once. Rescue workers used excavators for the task.
President Muhammadu Buhari demanded that rescue efforts be intensified as hospitals and emergency services are activated.
Fourscore Homes was building three towers in the area. The company claimed that it would provide a “stress-free life, with an elegant hotel feel” and promised to build “a luxurious lifestyle.” For $1.2 million, the cheapest unit sold.
The main building contractor and Fourscore Homes did not answer the phone when I called them.
