According to the Federal Trade Commission, criminals use the promise of third stimulus checks to steal money from victims who are not expecting it.

In March President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan. It authorized a third round pandemic-era payment of $1,400 per person. Through the end 2021, the IRS will send the payments to all eligible households.

Based on income, the IRS calculates check amounts and eligibility. Most payments are issued automatically by the IRS based on information from an upcoming tax return, or an online tool that is available for those who do not normally file one.

Some eligible individuals have not received payment yet. Other people who were able to get a second or first round of payments may believe they are qualified but could not because the criteria for receiving the third round is different.
