(Reuters] Democrat Eric Adams has won New York City’s mayoral race. His promises to improve public safety, and to give voice to working class residents were backed by his past experiences as a captain in the police force and as a Black male who witnessed police brutality at home as a teenager.
According to the Associated Press, Adams was the Brooklyn borough’s president since 2014. Following his defeat of Curtis Sliwa the Republican, Adams will now be the city’s 2nd Black mayor.
Adams, 61 years old, will take over from Bill de Blasio Democrat in January. He was termed out after eight years.
Adams will be responsible for overseeing America’s largest city’s recovery from the coronavirus epidemic. He also has to deal with wealth inequality and a lack of affordable housing. Adams is also expected to manage struggling public schools.
It was expected that he would win easily in an overwhelmingly Democratic town.
As the party tries to keep a delicate alliance between centrists and progressives in Washington, Joe Biden could have some indications of how voters feel about his victory.
Adams won the primary election of the party with a coalition which resembled some voters that helped Biden win the Democratic nomination for 2020. This included his support from more moderate Black voters.
Progressives are concerned that Adams may be too accommodating to the real-estate industry. This powerful lobby gave generously to Adams’ campaign.
RESTRICTED TO ‘STREETS’, NOT ‘TWEETS.
Adams is not shy in suggesting his victory can be a model for other national Democrats. Adams has dismissed critics of his left-leaning agenda who, he claims, do not represent mainstream Democrats.
“I say it is time to give up on the idea that our tweets are correct. “We should have safe streets,” Adams stated to CNN in July after he was nominated for the party’s nomination.
He described himself as “blue-collar New Yorker” and said that working-class Democrats were ignored by the party’s liberal wing.
After the killing of George Floyd (a Black man) in Minneapolis in 2020, there has been a lot of protests.
A rise in crime rates has led mayoral candidates in the nation to demand more funding for policing. This is because public safety is now a top concern. [nL1N2RN35P]
Adams claimed that the city could not make a complete economic recovery without combating violent crime. Adams slammed the left-wing activist’s “defund police” movement.
Instead, he sought to balance the calls for aggressive policing with vowing reforms and diversity at the top of his department.
His own story gave credibility to his words. Adams recalls being beat by officers when he was a teenager. Adams was a New York City Police Department officer. Adams earned a reputation for being an activist by co-founding 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care. This advocacy group spoke out against the brutality of police officers.
Adams was able to secure the support of key unions and is considered labor-friendly. His statements also indicate that Adams is labor-friendly.
Adams has admitted to having had his eyes on City Hall for many decades. He has been accused of changing his appearance for political gain. Adams switched to the Republican Party several years ago before running for the State Senate as a Democrat. He has described himself both as a progressive as well as a moderate.
