(Reuters] – Democratic New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was elected to a second term after defeating Republican opponent Jack Ciattarelli. This was reported by the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Murphy (64) is the first Democratic governor in New Jersey to be reelected in over 40 years. Murphy has led a state shift towards the left, with new taxes on millionaires and stricter gun restrictions. He also oversees a rise in minimum wages and paid sick leaves. He also defends his strong approach to coronavirus, such as mandating schools wear masks.
Ciattarelli, a former lawmaker for the state, was a strong supporter of Murphy’s campaign. Murphy is a rich former executive at Goldman Sachs (NYSE) and has accused him of being out-of-touch.
New Jersey’s trend has been steady in favor of Democrats over the past few years. It won 10 of the 12 U.S. House of Representatives state seats in 2020. Last year, President Joe Biden swept the state past former President Donald Trump by more than 15%.
