ROUEN, France (Reuters] – The British scallop dredger, which was being impounded in France by French authorities, left the French port at Le Havre Wednesday night. It was headed home. This ends a row that aggravated tensions with London and Paris over post-Brexit fishing right.

An earlier Wednesday ruling by a French court, Rouen, said that the Cornelis Gertjan was now free to go. It overturned a demanded from its captain for a 150,000-euro ($174,000) bond.

French authorities took the boat away last week. They claimed that it was being caught by French fishermen fishing in French territorial waters.

Jondy Ward, the lawyer representing the Irish captain said that the vessel was part of a larger political dispute between Paris and London regarding fishing rights following Britain’s exit from the European Union.

The vessel was tracked by marinetraffic.com and left Le Havre, France around 1800 GMT. It was traveling at 7.4 knots.

The website says that it ran its course in Shoreham, England’s south coast.

Andrew Brown (director of the trawler) told Reuters, “We are clearly delighted and relieved that it can leave and our crew may get home,” following the court decision.

“We’re also pleased that no bond has been set by the courts for the release and maintenance of the vessel. He said that he was relieved that crew members, who are in good spirits, were able to return home.

In exchange for the Captain and vessel being allowed to leave French jurisdiction, the French authorities initially requested a 150,000 Euro bond. This was in preparation for the trial that is scheduled for next year.

France and Britain were at the edge of a cross-Channel war this week. Britain claimed London was refusing French trawlers fishing licences under a post Brexit deal.

Britain claimed it would honor the agreement and France denied that they were. Paris threatened to tighten controls on British trucks and produce entering France and ban British trawlers from French ports.

France reacted at last moment and said it would make another attempt to reach a compromise with Britain. On Thursday, senior French and British officials will meet to discuss the matter.
