(Reuters). -Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has won a second term. This victory comes after a turbulent year marked by George Floyd’s assassination by a white officer of the city police.

Frey, 40, a Democrat, had opposed a ballot measure – backed by his more liberal rivals – that would replace the police department with a new public safety agency.

He instead found a middle way, calling on police reforms, while vowing to hire additional officers in a department that was hard hit by resignations and struggled to reduce violent crime.

Minneapolis uses a ranked choice system to elect its mayor. Voters can choose up to three of the candidates according their preference.

Frey took the lead on Tuesday after the first round. However, he was not able to reach the necessary mark for an overall victory. On Wednesday, he secured his victory in the second round of voting.
