(Reuters] – Facebook (NASDAQ) is currently testing new methods for creators to earn money via Facebook Groups. For example, users could pay fees for access to specific content or to conversations within subgroups.
Facebook changed its name recently to Meta. It said the test was part a wider paid subscription campaign. This social media giant is just one of the many tech titans who have worked to attract social media users and large numbers through new tools and payments.
Facebook has been focusing on community building in recent years. Facebook Group administrators now have the ability to manage e-commerce shops that sell merchandise and create fundraisers for the group. This could help offset some of the cost associated with running a Group.
In a dig at Apple’s (NASDAQ:) subscription fees, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, stated Wednesday that creators will be able share customized links which allow them to take payments directly. Facebook’s subscriptions service was launched last year.
During its livestreamed Communities Summit the company presented a variety of changes to Groups. Subgroups, available for free and paid members, will enable them to split up within their groups in order to concentrate on particular topics or areas.
Researchers and legislators are examining Facebook Groups. These groups have been accused of allowing extremism, health misinformation and violent rhetoric to thrive without having them properly regulated.
Facebook spokespersons stated that the company was testing community fundraisers using select groups. They also said that only those Groups, which have been created in less than 30 days violate Facebook’s content rules and frequently share dangerous content or misinformation, were eligible.
Facebook stated that administrators of groups would have the ability to personalize their appearance, and that members will soon receive “community award” recognition for posting valuable content.
It teased another new experience that combines “the best pages and groups” and claimed it would enable administrators of Pages access to the same moderation tools and features as Groups. This was said to be in the early stages of testing and will launch over the course of next year.
