REUTERS/Androniki Christodoulou/File Photo TOKYO, Reuters – Japan’s service sector activity grew in October for the first time since November 21st. This was due to a rebound in consumer sentiment following the subsided coronavirus pandemic. It also gave rise to broad-based demand.
As new cases and deaths dropped rapidly in September and the pressure on the healthcare system decreased, the government ended the emergency measures.
According to Usamah Bhatti (economist at IHS Markit), “Japanese service sector companies reported that their activity has returned to expansion territory” for the first time since nearly two years.
“Firms continue to build capacity in anticipation for a gradual recovery, despite the three-month low rate of job creation.”
The seasonally adjusted final au Jibun Bank Japan Services Purchasing Managers’ Index increased to 50.7, matching a flash reading.
The services sector’s activity did not fall below the 50.0 threshold, which distinguishes expansion and contraction. This was the result of the economic slump that began in January 2020.
This was the longest period of continuous decline since the 27-month stretch that ran through March 2010 during the global financial crisis.
A few economists think that an increase in sentiment in the service sector will help offset slowdowns in exports and output, which have been hit hard by persistent shortages of parts and chips worldwide.
According to the PMI survey, the service sector experienced the largest jump in input costs since November 2019. However, new and outstanding businesses continued to contract despite an increase in business activity.
Composite PMI (calculated using manufacturing and services) grew for the first six months. It rose to 50.7 in September from 47.9.
