Meta announces new revenue features for Facebook Groups

As Mark Zuckerberg pursues a future in the metaverse, he has to count on his existing business — Facebook — to provide the capital to get him there.

The company announced Thursday, a week after it changed its corporate name to Meta and unveiled a decade-long strategy. It said that Facebook will be adding several features designed to increase the appeal of the platform and fight off competitors like TikTok and other social media platforms such as TikTok. Facebook is also trying to get creators to create high-quality content through new revenue streams. Administrators and moderators of Facebook Groups will be able create fundraisers within their group, enable e-commerce shopping or charge subscribers for access to special subgroups.

CNBC spoke with Tom Allison about the Facebook app’s goal to provide the most sustainable place for creators. He said that it was important to offer creators a business model that is profitable and offers valuable content. We recognize that the work done with the group admins extends and acknowledges that.

Facebook Groups have been a major part of Facebook’s strategy for the last few years. They allow users to find others with similar interests and connect with them in areas such as cars, food or art.

Allison claimed that Facebook has tens or millions of groups and that over 1.8billion people are using Groups monthly. It’s 62% off Facebook’s 2,91 billion monthly active users.

This rollout is Meta’s first since last week’s name change. Zuckerberg presented a long demo that showcased his efforts on virtual reality and augmented reality products and services.

Meta’s goal is to develop a metaverse. It would allow users to live in a virtual environment where they can work, play, and even live. The metaverse strategy of Facebook was first outlined by the company in 2018. a document reported last week by CNBC

However, the metaverse is still years away so it will take a significant investment. Facebook’s core social media services will need to be expanded in order for Zuckerberg to achieve his goals.

Facebook’s new Groups features do not have the intention of increasing its revenue but are more aimed at encouraging users to keep their accounts active and growing them. The company stated that Facebook won’t take any cut from the Groups revenue features.

A small processing fee will apply to all fundraising activities, as well as taxes. The fees to shop transactions will be waived up until June 2022. Additionally, the company has stated it will not share any funds from paid subgroups.

Allison stated that each of the features would allow administrators to return more money into their groups.

Allison stated that Facebook’s app will remain the same name as it is now and will still play an integral role while the company concentrates on the metaverse.

Allison stated that Facebook will remain Facebook, just like Instagram and WhatsApp. Messenger will replace Messenger. We are all part and parcel of Meta. Together, we will build the future for these metaverse experiences.
