American AirlinesYou were jolted by mass cancellations last weekend, has offered flight attendants as much as triple their pay to work holiday trips if they also have perfect attendance through early January.

This offer is just days after American cancelled hundreds of flights over the weekend. Many of these cancellations were due to flight attendant shortages. American has offered additional incentives to ensure that they don’t repeat the mistake.

According to CNBC’s internal memo, American stated that flight attendants or reserve crew members working on trips between Nov. 23-29 or Dec. 22-January 2 will be paid time-and-a half. They will also receive an additional 150% pay for peak-period flights if they have not been absent from Nov. 15 to Jan. 2.

Brady Byrnes wrote that the last week and particular months have been tough. He is vice president for flight service to flight attendants.

Byrnes said that “from mother nature wreaking havoc upon the operation, to the myriad policy changes you have to maintain and an increase incidence of customer misconduct, you’ve dealt with a lot”. He was referring to an increase in disruptive travelers including an assault on a flight attendant by a passenger last week.

Airlines spent much of last year urging workers to take leaves of absence or accept buyouts.
Travel demand rose in summer and fall, but some airlines didn’t have sufficient staff to handle routine disruptions such as bad weather. Southwest Airlines offered flight attendants double pay to get more people to pick up shifts during July 4 weekend.
