GLASGOW, (Reuters) – Thousands marched through Glasgow Saturday as part of a demonstration demanding bolder international action. They started from a park in Glasgow.

Climate-conscious citizens, activists, students and others were all wrapped up in the cold as they made their way westward from Kelvingrove Park towards the George Square.

A crowd of energetic youths carried banners with red flags that read “Capitalism kills the planet” and shouted out support for socialism, while simultaneously punching in the air.

Numerous Scottish national flags were waved in wind among the others. Others called for climate justice and the protection of vulnerable farmers.

A few blocks away at the COP26 meeting, which has been underway https://www.reuters.com/business/cop since Monday and runs for another week, speakers sounded the alarm on how global warming is ravaging farmlands and threatening food security.

A week of government speeches and pledges so far has included promises https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/new-promises-glasgow-climate-talks-2021-11-02 to phase out coal, slash emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane and reduce deforestation. But activists say that there isn’t enough evidence to support the claims.

Actor IdrisElba admitted that he didn’t have the credentials necessary to address climate change but stated that he was there to amplify the threat climate change poses to global food security.

Vanessa Nakate, a climate justice advocate from Uganda, sat at the same table as Vanessa Nakate and asked the world to cease burning fossil fuels which are the major cause of rising temperatures.

She stated that “We are witnessing farms crumble and livelihoods being lost because of floods, droughts or swarms de locusts,” which is all being made worse by climate change.

“The climate crisis is a threat to the lives of many in my country as well as across Africa”

Nakate was asked about her involvement in climate negotiations and she mentioned the outdoor protest.

“Change is what is happening outside, what young people are doing, organizing … climate strikes. She said that this is the place where there is change.

Representatives from Unilever (NYSE 🙂 as well as representatives from PepsiCo, (NASDAQ :), addressed the conference on corporate responsibility for making commerce and trade more sustainable.
