Athletics-Olympic champion Jepchirchir, Korir win New York City Marathon -Breaking

NEW YORK (Reuters). Peres Jepchirchir was the Olympic Champion and won the New York City Marathon 50th anniversary on Sunday. After a fierce three-way fight, he won in 2 minutes 22:39. Albert Korir took the win in the men’s race, in 2 hours 8:22.

Jepchirchir was the first to win both the Olympic gold medal and the famed race through five boroughs in one year. Compatriot Viola Cheptoo finished second and Ethiopian Ababel Yehaneh third, respectively.

American Molly Seidel finished fourth at the Tokyo Games with the bronze.

Korir was second for 2019, having established a 17-second advantage over the 35-kilometre mark. He leapt up into the air and broke the tape in Central Park. Italian Eyob faniel finished third, while Moroccan Mohamed El Aaraby came in 44 seconds.

The temperature hovered around 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.44°C) on Staten Island as the marathon major kicked off at 8 a.m. ET was back in action after being on hiatus for one year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Swiss Marcel Hug was victorious in the men’s division of wheelchairs in 1:31.24. Paralympic champion Madison de Rozario, who finished in 1:51.01.
