HOUSTON (Reuters] – Two investigations into Sunday’s deadly stampede that occurred at Travis Scott’s Astroworld music festival in Houston left at least eight victims dead, and many more injured.
Houston authorities said they were performing autopsies of Frriday victims as quickly as possible to ensure their bodies can be returned to loved ones. The identities of some deceased will be made public on Sunday.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said that the dead were all young. Two were 14 years old, two were 16, and two were 21. Another two were 23. The remaining two were 23, while the seventh was 27.
He also said that a eighth victim remains unidentified.
Harris County Judge Lina Hildago demanded an independent investigation of the tragedy. She spoke out about the fact that 50,000 people were at the rap festival when it happened.
“Perhaps they were not clear enough. Hildago stated that plans may have been well-designed but weren’t implemented. All those affected deserve answers, including the families of all those who lost their loved ones.”
Scott spoke out in a video that was released to Twitter (NYSE:) Saturday. He said that while on stage, he could not have imagined the gravity of the situation. Scott described the event as “absolutely devastating”.
Troy Finner, chief of Houston’s police department, stated that his agency had launched a criminal investigation through homicide detectives and narcotics detectives. This was in response to reports that someone had been injecting drugs into the crowd.
Samuel Pena (the city’s fire chief) said that several concert-goers needed to be revived using Narcan. He also mentioned that a security guard appeared to have had a substance injected into his neck by a concert-goer.
After the tragedy at NRG Park, which occurred at 9.30 pm during Scott’s headline performance at NRG Park, the festival was cancelled for the remainder of its two-day duration. Scott is a Grammy nominee and producer.
Officials said that the deaths occurred near the stage as the crowd surged toward it. Some suffered cardiac arrests or other trauma.
