UK to roll out COVID-19 antiviral drug trial this month -Health Security Agency -Breaking

LONDON, (Reuters) – Britain will begin to use Merck’s molnupiravir COVID-19 antiviral pills in a trial drug later this month. Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser at the UK Health Security Agency, stated on Sunday.

Last week Britain became the first country in the world to approve the potentially game-changing COVID-19 antiviral pill, jointly developed by U.S.-based Merck & Co Inc and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.

In October, the government announced that it had obtained 480,000 Merck drugs and 250,000 antiviral pills. Pfizer Inc.

Hopkins said that molnupiravir was approved by the BBC television. He added: “That’s great news. It will begin to roll out through a trial at the end/beginning of December.”

Hopkins stated that all of the tests so far were done on the unvaccinated. This will help to understand the effectiveness in the larger vaccinated population.

She said that the Pfizer new drug will not be licensed before next year. The approval is expected to take at least a few more months.
