It is the end. Musk asked his 62.5 million Twitter followersTo determine the future direction of some of his Tesla holdings.

Musk responded to a Saturday Twitter poll by saying: “Much has been made recently of unrealized gain being a way of tax avoidance. So I propose selling 10% my Tesla stock. Would you agree with this?

A billionaire allowed people to choose to vote “Yes”, or “No”. He also promised to respect the poll results.

3,592,252 respondents responded. 57.9% voted “Yes!”

Musk had previously stated that he expected to sell “a big block” (or more) of his options by the end of the fourth quarter.

A visit to the Code Conference in September, Musk said when his stock options expire at Tesla, his marginal tax rate will be over 50% and that he was already planning to sell soon.

“I have a bunch of options that are expiring early next year, so … a huge block of options will sell in Q4 — because I have to or they’ll expire,” Musk said at the conference.

There are also other members of the Tesla board, current or former. Robyn Denholm Kimbal Musk Ira Ehrenpreis and Antonio Gracias have also sold hundreds of millions of dollars worth of their Tesla shares since Oct. 28, as the company’s stock rallied.

After a reorganization, shares rose record third quarter for Tesla, and an announcement from car rental company HertzHertz announced that the company was placing orders for 100,000 Tesla vehicles to be added to its fleet. Musk was unable to confirm that Tesla had ordered 100,000 Tesla vehicles for its fleet until a week later after Hertz announced it. signed a contract with the company yet. He taunted on Twitter investors that were in short Tesla shares, saying: “Tesla Hertz shorts”

Tesla shares rose significantly after the Hertz announcement and Elon Musk’s net worth has increased substantially since then.

Elon’s tax bill

Musk, regardless of poll results would likely have sold millions of shares by the end of this quarter. Why? Because of a coming storm tax bill of more than $15 billion

Musk’s options are due to expire August next year. However, Musk will have to pay income taxes on any gains in order to use his options. The options can be treated as employee benefits or compensation and will therefore be subject to the top ordinary income levels of 37% + the 3.8% net investment taxes. Since the options were granted while he was California tax resident, he will have to pay 13.3% tax.

Combining the federal and state taxes, they will total 54.1%. The total tax bill for all his options at current prices would amount to $15 billion.

Musk hasn’t yet confirmed how much the tax bill will be. He tweeted, “Note: I don’t take any bonus or cash salaries from anywhere.” Since I have only stock, the only way to pay taxes is to actually sell it.

Musk’s vast holdings include options for 22,862,050 shares worth $6.24. These options will be expire August 13, 2022. These options were granted to Musk in 2012.
