(Reuters] -Friday’s Astroworld show by Travis Scott was an attempt to mark the resurgence his home town with an incredible live event following the global pandemic that halted popular hip hop festival.
But disaster struck during his headline performance as, over the course of the Grammy Award-nominated rapper’s 90-minute show, at least eight of the 50,000 attendees died https://www.reuters.com/world/us/least-8-dead-many-injured-texas-music-festival-media-2021-11-06 and many more were injured as fans surged toward the stage.
Scott said to the crowd moments before tragedy struck, as captured by video posted online.
Aerial footage from the video shows a tight knit crowd of concert-goers around 18 minutes. The footage was originally uploaded by YouTube users but removed due to copyright violations on Saturday morning.
“I want to see some ragers man. “Who wants to rage?” Scott called out at the audience just a quarter of an hour into his performance to Houston’s NRG Park. According to videos, the concert was recorded.
According to videos that carried an Apple (NASDAQ) Music watermark, audience members were seen moving to the music and some even body surfing above the crowd.
Scott interrupts the YouTube footage at around half an hour. He says: “There is an ambulance in the… whoah whomah.” An aerial shot shows the whitetop of what looks like an emergency vehicle being swallowed in the crowd.
Scott resumes his show just moments later. He energizes the audience by saying, “Two hands high, I want this to be… ground shake.”
The show is halted again less than 15 minutes later.
We need someone to help us, so somebody has been passed out. Do not touch him. Everyone just get up. Scott calls for help from security as yellow-clad security officers below appear to try to draw people out of the crowd.
The show will continue for a few more seconds.
Scott once again asks the audience for an “earthquake” and then shares the stage with Canadian actor, rapper, songwriter, Drake towards the end.
Scott posted a Facebook post Saturday morning expressing his shock at the events and pledging to support police in their investigation. He also expressed his desire to see the community healed.
He wrote, “My prayers are out to all the families and those affected,” We love you all.
