Turkey to cut some fixed electricity fees to help consumers -Breaking

ANKARA, Reuters – Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan announced Monday that two fixed payments will be removed from electric bills. This was in addition to the fact that some subsidies had been provided by his government.

Erdogan will face tough elections in mid-2023. His approval rating has been affected by Turkey’s almost 20% inflation rate and recent increases in staples like food, gas and fuel.

Reuters was told last week by officials that Ankara had prepared a fiscal support package for lower-income households. It included measures like raising the minimum wage and reducing energy prices.

Erdogan announced after the Ankara cabinet meeting, that the government will eliminate the fixed 2% electricity bill payment for funding state broadcaster TRT. A further 1% payment is levied to cover outstanding energy costs.

Erdogan stated that he would not disrupt the financial balances of the firms involved in energy and will not victimize his citizens to manage this crisis.
