TOKYO, Reuters – Japan’s sentiment index for the service sector rose 13.4 points, to 55.5, in October according to a Cabinet Office survey. This was after the Cabinet Office survey revealed that the government relaxed state-of-emergency restrictions last month, and the number of COVID-19 new cases plummeted to their lowest level in over a year.

This index was 42.1 in September. It is based upon a survey of taxi drivers, restaurant workers, and hotel staff, who were called “economy monitors” because they are close to retail and consumer trends.
